On the plain of Emporda, only a few kilometers away from the Greek Roman ruins of Empuries, stands Casa Tres Patis, a 300 square meter standalone residence that interprets the classic prototype of a Mediterranean villa in modern language. The project was designed by Twobo Architects and is based on a central concept: creating a habitable space where architecture engages in dialogue with light, wind, water, and the body.

A couple consisting of an art historian and a photography director working in California commissioned architects to develop this project. In order to determine the design methodology, they shared several key reference materials with the research team: on the one hand, a case study of residential buildings in California, which presented their experimental views on modern housing; On the other hand, the Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries, where the architecture is associated with the region's ruins and emptiness.

Therefore, Twobo envisioned Casa Tres Patis as a set of independent pavilions arranged around three courtyards, becoming the backbone of family life. Every courtyard is a living space, a gathering and contemplation place, and an active element of architecture. The first one is open, obscured by a tree, reminiscent of a social life on a large square, with a stone table, a barbecue grill, a climbing gourd, and an area for playing patanka. The latter reinterprets the Roman Impluvium as a place of contemplation and rest. The third one is private and peaceful, with a fragrant garden that reminds people of the garden of a monastery.

The pavilions are designed as lightweight and almost movable structures, each corresponding to a specific aspect of life: a main structure that includes a kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedroom; The other room has a children's room and a laundry room; The third one is used as a guest room and workshop. All of these are built with materials that are compatible with the climate and environment: ceramic grids, wood paneling, metal structures, and large glass windows.

Local handmade materials are integrated into every corner of the residence, adding a new layer of color to tradition. The most eye-catching feature here is the grid and blue tiles made by Ceramica Ferres, whose studio is just a few kilometers away.

Taking Richard Neutra, a key figure in California's modern movement and architect of Case Study House # 20, as an example, these rooms feature repetitive metal structures and large windows protected by natural shadows or triangular grids to reduce intense summer sunlight.

The residence attempts to blur the boundaries between the interior and exterior through continuous sidewalks, concrete sidewalks, large windows, and showers leading to the terrace. A simple grey mud wall surrounds this land, protecting the house from the influence of the Tramuntana wind and outlining fragments of the rural landscape for the people living inside.

In terms of comfort, Casa Tres Patis combines passive and active energy efficiency solutions: natural cross ventilation, optimal solar positioning, insulated walls, greywater recycling systems, and solar panels. All of these strengthen the studio's commitment to sustainable architecture without giving up on expressiveness and aesthetics.

Casa Tres Patis does not intend to impose a lifestyle, but rather proposes a way of life that encourages a calm rhythm, connection with nature, and a lifestyle centered around the courtyard. Twobo provides a poetic reinterpretation of Mediterranean tradition, where happiness comes from the harmonious relationship between architecture, landscape, and body.
