In the 1200 year history of Kyoto, the planning technique of the "Tiao Fang system" has been present since the establishment of the capital during the Heian period. During the Edo Shogunate period, "front shops and back houses" became the mainstream urban housing types that met the standards. Due to restrictions such as fire prevention and taxation, the narrow width of the town house has been preserved. Some people refer to this slender structure as the 'eel bed'.

In a typical townhouse, the houses facing the street are usually vertically divided into a ground floor and a raised platform adjacent to it. The dirt room leads all the way from the entrance to the interior of the residence, usually paved with concrete or stone bricks. A stove is set up here, and smoke is emitted through the skylight above the fire bag. On the other side, the elevated part of the platform is horizontally divided into different activity spaces: from the outside to the inside, there are shops (mi セ), home kitchens (dadoko), inner rooms, and rooms (arcades); These spaces are separated by movable and detachable structures to meet different usage needs. The arrangement order of these rooms implies a gradual shift from "public" to "private" space.

The renovated house consists of two independent two-story volumes, east and west, and a corridor connecting the two. The original exterior facade and shop space outside the town have been removed; The space between the earth and the fire bag is also broken by the raised platform that crosses the kitchen; A ceiling was erected above the stove where it should have been open. The primitive spatial order has been replaced by a sense of abruptness, strangeness, and absence.

We will divide the renovation design into two steps. The first step is to restore the typical spatial planning that fits this house, in order to extract its structural logic; The second step is to implant the current functional requirements under the logic of refactoring, in order to stimulate the rebirth of the century old house. The specific operation steps are as follows:

1. Taking the columns inside the garage as a clue, return the exterior facade of the current garage to its initial construction position, define the boundary of the original store (miku), and set up a vestibule between it and the street. Remove the wall and embed it at the junction of the earth room and the living room to complete the equipment layout, and use three horizontal planes of different sizes to guide the transition from the fire bag to the living room Restore the functional responsibilities of the fire bag used for lighting and ventilation in the past; Wires, range hood exhaust, and air conditioning ducts are all arranged through fire bags with exposed wires

In the renovation, we established some corresponding or parallel spatial relationships to connect nature and artificiality, history and present. We hope that the spatial characteristics of mutual infiltration can inadvertently bring visitors some delicate experiences across time, a glimpse of the cultural core of local conditions, scenery, and people blending together.

In order to meet the different living experiences of our guests, we have designed four different room types including traditional Japanese style rooms, modern Japanese style rooms, Western style rooms, and suites. Among them, the Japanese style rooms can flexibly arrange beds on tatami mats, while the Western style rooms and suites are equipped with Western style bed furniture.

This practice has allowed us to appreciate the important help that research based on "typology" can bring to design practice. Finally, let's return to Aldo Rossi's statement: "The study of cities should not only focus on their physical form and evolution, but also pay attention to the values carried and conveyed by these forms
