The project involves the protection and restoration of a modernist building built in 1967, located in Ginza, Tokyo, which is considered a model of metabolic architecture. This building is a unique work by one of Japan's most famous architects, Kenzo Tange, who designed a creative new form on a small plot of land to symbolize Japan's rapid post-war economic growth. The cylindrical core in the center of the building accommodates vertical transportation routes such as stairs, elevators, and pipelines. The office space protrudes outward from the core, giving it a unique appearance.

The painting work on the exterior walls was renovated in 1993, and the internal facilities and exterior were renovated in 1999. This time, the structure and function have been reinforced and renovated as a whole to extend the service life of the building for decades.

Given the unique structural system, the updated plan has undergone seismic reinforcement, while identifying weak points in the building through seismic response analysis to minimize the required space. Carbon fiber board is used as a bending reinforcement material attached to the column legs of the cylindrical core wall from the inside (approximately one layer), and thin steel plates are installed as shear reinforcement in the lower layers (from one to five layers). This significantly improves the seismic resistance while maintaining the original form of the building, and ensures the availability of small spaces.

On the exterior of the building, the design team conducted a paint inspection on the walls inside and outside the columns to reproduce the original color during construction. The team checked the painting history of the exterior wall inspection points and compared the colors with photos taken during the construction period to identify the colors.

In addition, the bottom and cylindrical shape of the eaves are illuminated, and LED lighting is introduced indoors. This changes the appearance of the building at night, emphasizing its existence as a local landmark both during the day and at night.

In terms of interior and facilities, the design team focuses on reflecting the needs of today's users. Specifically, the updated plan enhances security, implements Business Continuity Plan (BCP) measures, ensures barrier free access, and adds new shared spaces, achieving a more comfortable and user-friendly work environment.

The most important focus of this project is to determine which areas need renovation, which areas need protection, and record the history of each area before restoration. This metabolic architecture will not only add new functions and value, but also pass on to the next generation.
