Yuanbai Building is an existing building within the Zhuhai campus of Beijing Normal University. With the development of the campus, Yuanbai Building cannot meet the usage needs in terms of external image and internal functions. In the renovation design, by adding roof corridors, running tracks, and other methods, a three-dimensional walking path is formed that runs through 15 independent boxes in one go, transforming the originally boring roof space into a place for perceiving nature. In addition, by sorting and recreating the original architectural space, diverse communication spaces are created, making the building itself a "behavioral motivator" that matches the future education model of design colleges. The connection between humans and nature, and the interaction between humans, become the focus of design education.

Since its opening around 2004, Yuanbai Building has been used as a teaching building for design departments. Over time, the exterior facade of the building has peeled off and the paint has faded, the steel ladder has aged severely, the courtyard inside the building is overgrown with weeds, the floor tiles are severely broken and aged, and a large number of indoor functions are idle. After a systematic renovation project, Yuanbai Building has become the most beautiful part of the campus core landscape belt. A large amount of outdoor space and grey space are loved by teachers and students on campus. The newly integrated exhibition hall, atrium and other spaces have been integrated into the daily teaching work of the Future Design College. In the renovation design, we focus on two key issues: (1) How to maximize the utilization of existing buildings, integrate with the campus environment, and stimulate the vitality of the site under the triple constraints of planning, cost, and schedule? (2) Today, the Internet and smart phones are so developed, how can we create a space for communication and let people put down their phones to communicate face to face?

1. Facade renovation strategy under the constraints of construction period and cost

1. "Leather skin" mode to create a light disturbance external image enhancement strategy
On the basis of not damaging the original wall and roof materials, a layer of red and white overlapping "new clothes" is added to the building through dry hanging brick curtain walls and GRC curtain walls. A U-shaped glass is added to the top of the central white box, becoming the center and high point of the building community, making the chaotic Yuanbai Building community a cohesive whole.
. The outer box features a red brick curtain wall adorned with white grilles, echoing the red brick buildings surrounding the campus.

2. Strengthen and repeat formal motifs, enrich cultural genes
There is a two-story platform around the central box, with no natural lighting under the platform, and a square box at the entrance suggests the entrance.. Dismantle the original square box and extend the platform outward to form a triangular entrance canopy, creating a more cohesive design and becoming the main entrance of the building. Open a triangular skylight on the platform to provide natural lighting for the grey space at the entrance. In landscape design, the triangular motif is also used to enhance the rich space for passing campus teachers and students.

Secondly, the "behavioral motivator" that matches the new education model. German philosopher Jaspers once said, "The essence of education is one tree shaking another tree, one cloud pushing another cloud, and one soul summoning another soul." Harvard University President Drew Faust believes that the collision and exchange of viewpoints brought about by the interaction between people in universities are indispensable elements of university education. How to create a vibrant communication space, create an informal outdoor learning environment, and integrate daily details into students' sustainable learning lives is the focus of our project thinking. We believe that the most fascinating part of a building is not the building itself, but the infinite possibilities triggered by the building.

1. "Box in Box": The space regeneration and ecological transformation of the central box create a multi-functional space.
The central box was originally an outdoor space with overgrown weeds inside.. After the renovation, a glass top cover was added to the top, transforming the "central box" into a covered grey space. The staircase was woven through the layers of stairs, and a large step was added to the first floor. The entire staircase system is both a traffic space and an activity space. Nowadays, all teachers and students in the school can hold activities here, such as singing concerts, fashion shows, graduation exhibitions, etc., to inspire infinite possibilities.

2. "Courtyard in the Garden": One square and one circle, weaving the public park path and creating an interdisciplinary communication venue that serves the entire campus.
The two courtyards were originally negative spaces, but the landscape design organized them into two courtyards, one square and one circle.. The square courtyard is surrounded by preserved phoenix wood to form red brick seats; The circular stage is set up around the original sunken terrain to form the core space. Weaving and repairing the original path, forming a multi-directional entrance path, introducing teachers and students into the courtyard, and creating a vibrant place for the entire campus. Nowadays, Fangyuan and Yuanyuan are places where schools hold various creative markets and cultural performances.

3. "Seeing and being seen", rich outdoor corridors and stairs create a lot of encounter spaces
Through the reorganization of outdoor corridors and stairs, transportation connections are provided and communication opportunities are created.. The rich changes in light and shadow also make these spaces a place for students to check in and a source of inspiration for artistic creation.

4.Integration of internal functions of buildings
In order to meet the needs of new teaching modes, the interior of buildings has also undergone spatial integration and redesign.. The two large lecture halls located on the first floor are integrated into a complete exhibition space, with large steps embedded inside to form a multifunctional exhibition space.

3. Connecting the Architecture as a Whole with a Coherent Path

1. Ink and brush travel through the dragon, creating a three-dimensional path of seeing mountains and waters in one go
The "Yuanbai" in Yuanbai Building is taken from the calligraphy of Professor Qi Gong, a famous Chinese calligrapher and professor at Beijing Normal University.
. There were originally some outdoor corridors and stairs between the boxes in Yuanbai Building, but they could not penetrate all the boxes, resulting in a broken path and different charm. During the renovation process, following the charm of Qi Gong's calligraphy, the original "broken strokes" were connected through the addition of corridors, running tracks, and other methods, forming a seamless three-dimensional walking path that connects the roof and ground. The location of Yuanbai Building is backed by mountains and facing water, blending the charm of the site with the theme of "brush and ink swimming dragon", providing opportunities to experience nature from different perspectives. The roof corridor is wrapped in perforated aluminum panels and designed with night lighting, resembling a dragon swimming. Cover the existing equipment and shafts on the roof with grilles, and set up lawns or wooden enlarged platforms in some areas to create a space and trigger different usage behaviors.

2.The interweaving of old and new, integrated into the campus walking path, creates a campus art path
The main elevation of Yuanbai Building is higher than the campus road, and there are two stone paths on the east and west sides that enter the building, with poor accessibility.. In the renovation, the red brick floor is interwoven with the original stone road, the walking path is widened, and an enlarged platform and rest seats are set up. Combined with lighting design, a space welcoming pedestrians is formed, embedded in the overall walking path of the campus. These paths have also become spaces for art college students to conduct outdoor photo evaluations and showcase their works.

Fourth, Campus Building Renovation Strategy for Dual Carbon Goals
Yuanbai Building is an important part of the Beijing Normal University Zhuhai Campus series of green renovation projects. In the design and use process, guided by the dual carbon goals, combined with objective factors such as building status and cost schedule, reasonable strategies are adopted according to local conditions to reduce carbon emissions from the perspectives of energy, construction, operation, and education, and create a model of green campus buildings.. From an energy perspective, adopting high-efficiency air conditioning and openable window sashes, natural ventilation during transitional seasons, and reducing building energy consumption. From a construction perspective, a new opening has been added at the bottom of the central box of the building to enhance ventilation along the main wind path and create a pleasant microclimate; Add a skylight at the top to create usable indoor space, and elevate the skylight to achieve side ventilation, creating a ventilation effect. The facade combines different shading forms such as grilles and window frames, and is wrapped with window frames of different depths and directions according to different usage functions and orientations, forming rich facade expressions while reducing indoor direct sunlight and lowering summer cooling energy consumption. A large number of existing trees have been preserved in the inner courtyard and surrounding areas to maintain the carbon sequestration capacity of the original vegetation. These methods do not require overly complex technical equipment and cost investment, and can meet multiple needs such as green energy conservation, functional use, and external image. From an operational perspective, efficient and water-saving sanitary ware will be replaced, and water-saving irrigation methods will be adopted for greening projects to avoid excessive waterlogging of plants. Indoor and outdoor self-study and communication spaces make full use of natural light and ventilation to reduce energy consumption. From an educational perspective, the renovated Yuanbai Building is open to all teachers and students, and the building itself has become the object of design education and teaching, deepening teachers and students' understanding of the concept of low-carbon development. With batches of graduates leaving campus and heading to educational positions across the country, the concept of low-carbon and green has also been widely spread.
