The Jacques Mayriel School, located in the Green City of Benjell, embodies a climate sensitive educational design approach, completed in collaboration between Mohammed VI University of Technology and the Moroccan branch of the French secular missionary group OSUI. The project took only one year from conception to completion, meeting the rapid development needs of the community while also having phased flexibility to adapt to future developments.

Design inspiration and main concept: Inspired by the traditional educational architectural style of Morocco, the courtyard is designed as a multifunctional space with natural ventilation, visual continuity, and community participation. These well lit courtyards form buffer zones between different age groups and are essential shading areas for user experience and building environmental performance. The comb shaped spatial layout shapes every part of the school, ensuring clear spatial division for different age groups and integrating with the overall site organization.

Challenge and Project Time: One year of project time poses a challenge to balancing speed and quality. To ensure progress, the project team utilizes local materials and adjusts design strategies based on resource availability. The phased development plan requires a seamless transition between the first phase (dedicated to early education) and the second phase (which will introduce secondary school facilities). It is crucial to achieve smooth circulation and coherent layout in different regions to meet the functional needs of multi-level educational institutions.

Construction technology and materials: The building structure is mainly composed of reinforced concrete, and reinforced concrete is chosen because it is durable and can simplify construction in a tight time. The locally sourced stone and natural finishes highlight the connection between the project and the Moroccan background, while the lightweight roof above the shaded sidewalk and playground can alleviate extreme temperatures, reduce heat radiation, and improve user comfort. These design choices are aimed at creating a balanced and comfortable microclimate on campus, which is very suitable for cultivating a focused learning environment.

Space organization and urban integration: The project is divided into two main areas: the education building facing the main road, and shared facilities such as sports fields and restaurants located in the rear. The first phase of the project will accommodate kindergartens and primary school students, and will be equipped with administrative offices and a multifunctional environmental knowledge and cultural center. The second phase of the project will increase secondary education facilities and sports halls for phased expansion, while also centralizing the use of shared facilities. The "comb like" layout of the building is conducive to safe passage, and the ground floor classrooms are connected by shaded walkways and covered outdoor play areas.
