空间叙事的深度与通透性: 项目的空间设计极具叙事性,通过不同层次的开放与连接,讲述着建筑的历史故事。 “重现的通透性”是项目的核心亮点之一。建筑师通过拆除 20 世纪的干预,恢复了建筑原有的空间尺度,并通过庭院的设置,将自然光引入建筑中心,营造了通透明亮的学习环境。建筑内外空间的互动,也为孩子们提供了探索历史、感受自然的绝佳场所。此外,三个超大垂直开口的设计,更是将建筑分割,从而揭示出关键的历史节点,使建筑本身成为一本“活的教科书”。这种空间叙事方式,将建筑设计提升至一种全新的高度,引发人们对历史与未来的思考。
材料、光线与细节的完美融合: 项目对材料的选择与运用,以及对光线的控制,都达到了炉火纯青的地步。混凝土、木材、金属等材料的搭配,在保证现代功能性的同时,也赋予了建筑独特的质感。在对历史遗留元素的处理上,建筑师也展现了非凡的智慧,将 20 世纪的墙壁开口保留下来,使其成为叙述建筑历史的组成部分。光线的运用更是出神入化,自然光的引入,结合人工照明的设计,营造出温馨舒适的室内环境。细节的精致处理,例如定制家具、声学地板的安装,都体现了对儿童学习环境的周全考虑。这种对材料、光线和细节的极致追求,使得整个项目充满魅力,令人赞叹。

The original annex building of Montpellier Music Conservatory, located in the heart of É cusson district and adjacent to Saint Pierre Cathedral, has significant historical heritage value. Since its acquisition by the Ursulines in 1679 to establish Saint Charles House, the complex has undergone multiple renovations and large-scale intensive construction, particularly in the 20th century. Our intervention measure is a comprehensive restoration of the building to accommodate Pierre and Colette Soulages Primary School. To achieve this goal, we adopted the method of subtracting from the original building. Through meticulous archaeological evaluation and identification of significant elements, we have developed a set of methods to make bold decisions on demolition work while preserving and reinforcing key features, in order to restore the essence of the site.

Restoring the original transparency helps to reduce density and bring natural light into the center of the building, symbolizing a courtyard that reveals the original layout of the H ô tel de Brissac courtyard. After demolishing the middle floors added in the 1990s, the church also restored its original volume. This complex and demanding restoration process balances secular considerations and memory preservation, creating a brand new and unique place where children's well-being is prioritized.

Transparency of Reproduction
The courtyard has become the central space of the elementary school.. You can enter directly from the entrance and connect to the playground through a magnificent passage. This design directly referenced the original floor plan of the Ursula Monastery, which connected the large courtyard (now the courtyard) with the garden, which has now been transformed into a playground. Demolishing buildings constructed in the 20th century that obstructed the area revealed the historical facades of the Saint Charles House and the Brissac Hotel. Each wall tells a story through its exposed stone surface. The facade of the grand staircase has been restored to its original function, and the reopened historical opening has re established the rhythm of reality and emptiness associated with this important entrance point - while also providing a new perspective to admire the spire of the cathedral.
重现的通透性

The traces of past renovations, such as wall openings from the 20th century, have been preserved as hollow markers and now become part of the vertical surfaces that narrate the turbulent history and evolution of the building. The courtyard also helps with heat regulation through natural ventilation, creating a refreshing microclimate. The new opening highlights its identity in the overall spatial composition, benefiting the classroom from cross ventilation.

Sequentialization through gaps - three oversized vertical openings separate the building, revealing key historical nodes. The first opening can be seen from the new entrance of the school, marking the sale of the Ursuline Abbey after the French Revolution in 1792 and the simultaneous addition of the 'West Wing'. The second opening is visible in the current courtyard, highlighting the connection between the Brissac Hotel and the elevated West Wing before 1857, which closed off the monastery's large courtyard.

The third gap is located at the end of the western wing's gable, which frames the gallery and directs the view to the National School of Dramatic Arts of Montpellier, which was once connected to the current building. The demolition work in the 1990s erased the historical urban structure - now symbolized only by these large openings. The large aluminum framed windows provide ample natural light for the entire school, while offering a new perspective on Montpellier's historic city center.

Design strategy that respects history
The church is an important symbol of the site's history.. It was built by architect Nulma Polge in the Neo Gothic style in 1857 and underwent extensive renovations in the 1990s, adding concrete interlayers and dividing the building into two performance spaces for use by the music academy. The main goal of the repair is to restore the original volume by demolishing this intermediate floor. After demolition, the entire space is uniformly treated with non-woven fabric coated with lime to unify the damaged walls without damaging the decorations - although many elements are replicas of unknown ages. All colored glass windows have been carefully removed, repaired using traditional methods, and reinstalled.

Contemporary additives exist but are not conspicuous, avoiding interference with the historical scale. The heating and ventilation system is integrated into the floor, while acoustics and lighting are treated with independent metal frames and stretch fabrics, adding rhythm to each bay. The result is a strong and moderate intervention.

Layering of External Space
Around the 1880s, the gallery on one side of the garden was built with cast iron columns, brick arches, and metal beam floors.. These corridors provide shade and shelter, offering large outdoor extension spaces directly connected to the first floor classrooms. Due to various structural, fire safety, and accessibility issues, comprehensive reinforcement work is required to open these areas to the public. These now fully functional spaces provide shaded outdoor learning areas - perfect for Montpellier's Mediterranean climate.

The playground is divided into two different levels. The pebbles in the courtyard extend to the upper playground, becoming sparser to encourage vegetation growth. The lower courtyard is completely transparent, with a sawdust surface and about ten new trees planted. Over time, it will develop into a small urban forest, cultivating a direct connection with nature.

Respect the existing texture of the venue and handle the internal space in a restrained and concise manner. The stone walls have been stripped of accumulated layers, revealing finely crafted bricks and stones that reflect the previous architectural functions. Concrete was selected due to its ability to open up learning spaces to the circulation area. After undergoing original processing and sandblasting, it now forms a part of the spatial identity. Other interventions favor various forms of wood, ranging from solid or perforated wall panels to fiber ceilings, as well as customized furniture installations to optimize entrances and conceal technical pipes. All floors have been completely removed, leaving only the main beams exposed. A new flooring system was installed using a technique that retained visible lower beams and completed clay bead plastering, culminating in an appropriate acoustic flooring. These choices are made to provide the best learning conditions that meet contemporary primary school expectations.
