Groningen is the largest city in the northern Netherlands, with over 60000 students. The Healthy Aging Campus is located outside the historic city area, adjacent to the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), and gathers students and researchers from the medical school. KAAN Architecten has designed the first educational center in a series of shared facilities for a healthy aging campus, aimed at providing support for clinics, research, and industry within the campus. After large-scale development in the northern region of UMCG, the project will reconnect the campus with the historic city of Groningen. The plot of land was vacated by demolishing the existing road extending from the city center. The building is located at the center of this axis, becoming a highly recognizable landmark that strengthens the connection between the campus and the city. In addition to incorporating courtyard gardens on different floors and high-quality public spaces created by Felixx Landscape Architects, the new education center also connects various facilities of UMCG. At the same time, it enriches the landscape of the north entrance of the campus by extending outdoor public spaces indoors, enhancing the direct connection and smooth passage between various buildings.

The core of healthy aging lies in creating an environment that promotes health. The design of the education center emphasizes comfort, natural lighting, and ventilation to support physical, psychological, and social well-being. It encourages students to step out of the classroom and interact with the campus, providing various spaces for collaboration, learning, and relaxation. From open group workstations to independent areas with good privacy, the center promotes knowledge sharing among students, faculty, and visitors. Its hospitable appearance and vibrant project planning have injected new vitality into the campus.

The architectural design includes five independent volumes. These volumes seamlessly connect with the central foyer in both horizontal and vertical directions on the ground and upper floors. This layout promotes coherent flow between spaces and enhances accessibility and interactivity within the building. The position of the volume is determined based on the key line of sight and the expected spatial quality of the building complex. The horizontal foyer itself is framed by transparent facades facing the public square, main entrance, and multiple green courtyards. The courtyard marks the transition to existing buildings on different floors and introduces natural light to lower floors. The horizontal entrance hall always provides a view of the outdoor and other buildings, allowing users to naturally understand the layout of the building complex. It is organized around the brick masonry volume - the "seminar hall", with a food court, auditorium, lecture hall, project space, conference rooms, and an independent commercial area inside. The vertical entrance hall connects the "seminar hall" with the "learning tower", which houses classrooms, computer rooms, and skill laboratories. The spacious and comfortable staircase combined with the study space becomes a continuation of the public space on each floor. To encourage the use of stairs to promote healthy aging, elevators only stop at odd numbered floors and require users to climb up and down the stairs. The large deep windows on the brick facade of the tower present a rhythmic sense of openings and provide a diverse and pleasant view overlooking the city center. Finally, the pleasant and easily accessible green rooftop terrace enhances the green core of the campus.

Convenient accessibility, high comfort, ample natural lighting, and green views together create a healthy and sustainable environment. In addition, a range of sustainable materials with low environmental impact are used throughout the entire lifecycle of the building. These natural materials are chosen due to their elegant aging characteristics over time. The interior and exterior walls of the building are decorated with locally sourced bricks and stones. The selected light sandstone brick color helps create a warm atmosphere. The indoor doors and window frames are made of solid oak, and the floor and walls of the lobby are made of concrete material. The combination of brick walls and smooth and textured plain concrete defines the space, giving it a strong urban atmosphere while still maintaining a friendly indoor environment. The horizontal entrance hall has a high ceiling and a roof structure visible through metal mesh. The soft sunlight from the skylight and facade glass above adds brightness to it. In contrast to the entrance hall, the teaching space is decorated with wood, creating a light and natural atmosphere.
