Redefine student living experience: Projekt Praga sets a new benchmark for academic accommodation in Poland. The University of Warsaw has launched a new public dormitory for the first time in nearly 60 years, setting a new benchmark for student living in Poland. Functionality, accessibility, and a sense of community have become the core pillars of this project. The space we design not only focuses on architectural form, but more importantly, enhances the quality of life for residents, "said the Projekt Praga architectural team.

Warsaw University Student Apartment No. 7 has redefined student dormitories with a modern, practical, and community focused design, providing living space for 382 students. The project was selected through an architectural competition jointly organized by the Polish Architects Association (SARP) and the University of Warsaw, aiming to seamlessly integrate with the existing environment of the S ł u ż ewiec campus garden, while also meeting the university's long-term urban planning goals.

The dormitory was originally designed as an independent building that could adapt to the development of the campus and become a part of a larger city in the future. The project not only focuses on functionality, but also emphasizes creating a friendly and human scale environment, so that students can still feel the warmth of home in large-scale dormitory buildings. Through clever architectural design and attention to community and comfort, this latest Warsaw University dormitory sets a new standard for public student housing in Poland.

In the award-winning design by Warsaw architectural firm Projekt Praga, the dormitory breaks the traditional student dormitory model by adopting a four wing enclosed structure and replacing the traditional corridor layout with an "inverted" courtyard. The architectural inspiration comes from the windmill like flat layout, with four independent wing buildings forming closely connected small residential communities. The core of the building is a glass atrium, which brings natural light to the interior space and serves as a central place for student communication.

This people-oriented design abandons lengthy and lacking personalized corridors, allowing students to flow naturally between shared spaces and private neighborhood units. The external courtyard not only enhances residential privacy and avoids direct eye contact between rooms, but also naturally connects public areas with surrounding green spaces.

This new dormitory has a building area of nearly 10300 square meters and offers 138 residential units, mainly consisting of 2+2 and 1+1 double rooms, as well as apartments for doctoral students and professors. In addition, the dormitory also includes 16 fully adapted rooms for disabled students.
这座新宿舍建筑面积近 10,300 平方米,提供 138 个居住单元,主要为 2+2 和 1+1 双人房,同时设有博士生及教授公寓。此外,宿舍还包含 16 间完全适配残疾学生的房间。

At the stage of developing competition guidelines at the Academic Space Innovation Office (BIPA) of Warsaw University, the vision of the project has gradually taken shape. Through in-depth discussions with experts, academic representatives, and students, the project fully considers the actual needs of future residents. Based on research on student interaction and community building, the team has decided to divide the internal space into small neighborhood groups of approximately 18 people to promote social connections while preserving moderate private space.

However, what truly shapes the atmosphere of the dormitory is the carefully designed public space. Our goal is to create as many opportunities for spontaneous interaction as possible, "said Marcin Garbacki, an architect at Projekt Praga. Each floor is equipped with a shared kitchen with a dining area, as well as study rooms for individual and group learning. We hope to provide students with a space where they can easily socialize and focus on their studies, "architect Karolina Tunajek added.

The first floor space further enhances the community atmosphere, equipped with laundry rooms, fitness areas, shared leisure rooms, and service spaces that may be used for commercial purposes in the future, such as cafes. All of these areas can be accessed directly from inside and outside the building, and are equipped with themed courtyards to enhance their functionality:

让学生宿舍更有归属感

The interior design of Student Apartment No. 7 strikes a balance between simplicity and comfort, making it suitable for both studying and relaxation. Rust orange tones are widely used in architectural details, including furniture, railings, and building elements, adding a warm atmosphere to modern spaces and making the overall environment both fashionable and approachable. The bright and transparent shared lounge area is equipped with french window, which can directly view the green space. The comfortable sofa, natural fabrics and carefully selected decorative elements make the public space more homely. The kitchen adopts an industrial style design, with stainless steel countertops paired with prominent orange shelves, encouraging students to cook, communicate, and socialize here.

The new dormitories at Warsaw University attach great importance to accessibility and sustainability, ensuring a comfortable, inclusive, and environmentally friendly living environment for all students. The staircase free entrance, intuitive spatial layout, and clear flow design make it easy for all residents to enter and exit. Rooms suitable for disabled students are evenly distributed on different floors, allowing them to freely choose their living location and creating a truly integrated academic community.
华沙大学的新宿舍高度重视可达性与可持续性,确保为所有学生提供舒适、包容且环保的居住环境。无台阶入口、直观的空间布局与清晰的动线设计,使所有居民都能轻松出入。适配残疾学生的房间均匀分布于不同楼层,使他们能够自由选择居住位置,营造真正融合的学术社区。

Buildings also excel in energy efficiency, minimizing environmental impact and operating costs to the greatest extent possible. Large area windows are installed in the corridor area to introduce natural light and reduce the need for artificial lighting; Solar panels and heat recovery systems optimize energy use, while external blinds help regulate indoor temperature. Landscape design aims to preserve existing vegetation as much as possible and use permeable paving to create a harmonious coexistence between the building and the natural environment.
建筑在节能方面亦表现出色,最大限度降低环境影响与运行成本。走廊区域设置大面积窗户,引入自然光,以减少人工照明需求;太阳能板与热回收系统优化能源使用,而外部百叶窗则有助于调节室内温度。景观设计尽可能保留现有植被,并采用透水铺装,使建筑与自然环境和谐共生。

Our goal is to establish new standards for public student housing, "said architect Karolina Tunajek. And the final result far exceeds a simple dormitory building. The new dormitories at Warsaw University are not only a place for students to live, but also a space that promotes community interaction and helps students adapt to university life. Balancing privacy and socialization, this project creates a comfortable and inspiring learning and living environment through closely connected small residential units and vibrant public spaces, which can continue to evolve as students grow. Projekt Praga fully demonstrates that public buildings can also achieve excellent building quality and economic sustainability within a reasonable budget.
