Located in the hot and dry rural area of Andhra Pradesh in southern India, the design team's proposal aims to reimagine a fifteen year old "L" shaped school building as a vibrant learning environment that enhances the abilities of children of cement plant workers. This existing building is located at the back corner of a two acre barren land, structurally stable but in a semi damaged state. Apart from the shade provided by a few trees along the site fence, students have nowhere to hide from the strong sunlight during afternoon breaks. The internal space has poor lighting and ventilation, and is divided into sixteen large classrooms, a library that also serves as a teacher's office, two laboratories, and an external bathroom. Children find it difficult to reach due to the long distance and winding path. The client demand proposed by the Pena Foundation is to create a prototype design that can be implemented in cement plants in other regions, attracting teachers through carefully designed spaces and extracurricular projects, otherwise they would not consider relocating to this remote area.

In response, the design team's approach is to create a responsive and engaging design that will directly impact the quality and experience of education for students and teachers. Therefore, in addition to the K-10 curriculum required by the Indian government, the school curriculum also includes vocational training, sports, and arts. On the basis of the existing structure, the exterior facade of the building has been refined and renovated, adding Jiali (porous masonry screen) and strategically arranging windows to achieve cross ventilation and balance natural light in the learning space.

The internal layout has been redesigned, creating twenty-four classrooms, two teacher lounges, three laboratories, and two multifunctional libraries. Instead of expanding by adding heavy infrastructure, these additional projects are envisioned as standalone pavilions, including kitchens, canteens, audio-visual rooms, preschools, kindergartens, art rooms, bathrooms, and bicycle parking lots. The outdoor area, which was previously unusable due to temperatures reaching up to 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit), is now covered by a vast bamboo sunshade supported by a lightweight branched metal frame that connects the pavilion to the existing structure. Through government forestry projects, 12000 15 foot bamboo poles were purchased locally and dried on-site to ensure their long-term durability and adaptability to the local climate. These shaded areas serve as multifunctional spaces for school gatherings and outdoor teaching activities, constantly changing throughout the day as the sun shadows move.

The subtle use of color plays an important role in the school experience, with soft shades of pink, green, and blue complementing the earthy tones of the arid environment. The exterior is coated with light colored cement paint from adjacent factories. The Kadapa black limestone flooring that runs through the entire project was purchased from waste generated by nearby village stone processing plants. The construction will be carried out within six years, during which the school will operate as usual to avoid interfering with children's education. The project was not carried out by professional contractors, but by labor from nearby villages who received careful guidance from the chief engineer of the cement plant.
