This center is like creating a brand new 'porch' for the campus, and its layout facing the surrounding community adds vitality to the street view, thereby strengthening the connection between Spelman College and the surrounding community. The exterior facade of the building is unique, with materials and colors taken from local geological features and the architectural tradition of Spelmann College. The bottom layer adopts Flemish bricklaying technology, which can be seen everywhere on campus, and the brick color reminds people of the red clay unique to Georgia; The upper level is decorated with flat metal panels, giving the building a modern atmosphere and showcasing the innovative spirit nurtured within. The layered sunshade screens and blinds on the exterior facade of the building not only reveal the scene of internal activities and create a sense of transparency, but also serve multiple functions such as shading and introducing natural light. The upper level of the building provides shade for the concave lower level, forming an outdoor "porch" and creating a comfortable transition space between indoor and outdoor.

This design integrates multiple passive shading and cooling strategies to enhance the environmental performance of the building. The patterned sun visors and screens on the upper level of the building are carefully designed according to the angle of the sun, providing thermal comfort while introducing natural light, reducing energy consumption, glare, and building machinery load. The central skylight above the forum also helps to bring natural light into the room while avoiding excessive absorption of solar heat and glare. The shaded 'porch' area extends the duration of thermal comfort, allowing people to use these outdoor spaces for more weeks of the year. In terms of landscape design, elements such as soft gardens and rainwater basins help manage rainwater on site and alleviate the pressure on local infrastructure. To further improve building energy efficiency, Spelman College plans to install photovoltaic panels on rooftops in the future. These strategies, coupled with responsible procurement of materials, will help the building achieve LEED Silver certification.
