The history of the Sichuan University Museum can be traced back to 1914 when it became the Antiquities Museum of West China University of Technology. It was the first comprehensive university museum during the Republic of China era and the oldest museum in the Southwest region. The museum site is located by the Jinjiang River at the east gate of the old campus of Sichuan University. The historical axis of the campus is shifting towards the southwest, and the design of the museum building conforms to the campus grid, fully integrating into the campus texture and responding to the context of the site.

The museum consists of two main parts: the renovation of the old building and the new building. The old building was built 20 years ago, including the Yuanren Museum and the Nature Museum, with an area of approximately 14700 square meters. The Natural History Museum has a lower floor height and has undergone functional replacement and renovation to become a collection warehouse. The Humanities Museum has integrated with the new exhibition hall by renovating the exhibition space. The new building has a construction area of approximately 20000 square meters. A high-rise comprehensive building will be built on the north side of the campus, providing 18700 square meters of research and office space for the school.

The project is located in the old city area, with a very compact land use. The new and old buildings are seamlessly integrated on the plan, and the elevation difference between the new and old buildings is bridged by local ramps, maintaining the continuity of the flow and function. The expanded museum adopts a layout of "one museum and two wings", with a high rise public hall set between the new and old museums as the core spatial hub. Viewers can easily reach various floors through the lobby escalator, or spiral up the landscape ramp on the riverside side of the lobby, enjoying the scenery of Jinjiang along the way. The outer side of the ramp is a super large glass curtain wall, forming a frame like scene, achieving a dialogue between the museum and the urban environment.

The art exhibition hall utilizes the towering space at the top of the slope to create a ceremonial atmosphere. Electric louvers are installed on the inside of the skylight at the top, and aluminum tube sunshades and semi transparent sunshades are installed on the outer window facing the river, providing a viewing experience in natural light diffusion. The roof of the old building is combined with green plants to create a caf é and outdoor platform, creating a place with a bird's-eye view of the riverside.

The typical elements of historical architecture at Sichuan University, such as eaves, green bricks, and sloping hills, are translated in the new building. The bottom of the eaves adopts the iconic red color of Sichuan University, which enhances cultural identity. The hollow brick exterior wall of the entrance hall is constructed with stainless steel tie rods connected in series with ceramic bricks, creating a huge "wall of light". The triangular sloping roof adopts titanium zinc sheet instead of traditional tiles. The form of the high-rise comprehensive building refers to the Wangjiang Tower in the adjacent Wangjiang Park, reproducing the traditional multi story pavilions with layered eaves, and using the louvers at the bottom of the eaves to form ventilation chambers, combining the form design with environmental regulation.
