Sanya West Island Self built Commercial Renovation/Stacked Buildings

The project is located on a small island called Xidao in Sanya. It is a commercial transformation of a fishing village's self built house, with almost perfect sea view resources close to the coastline. Unlike other coastal areas in Sanya that present a strong commercial atmosphere, Xidao Island has not yet departed from the simplicity of its original fishing village. Here, it seems easier to immerse oneself in the sense of emptiness brought by the sea. The most basic commercial consideration in this project is to make good use of the sea view resources, but simply achieving this is obviously not enough to meet our ambitions. We hope to enhance the emotional value brought by the sea and interact with it.

Because this project is a homestead renovation grown in a natural fishing village, it is very close to the sea, only separated by a 4-meter one-way lane. Compared with the regulation that new houses in Sanya must be 300 meters away from the setback, this makes the site of this project particularly precious. Being so close to the sea, we wonder if it's possible to connect our small house with the sea, at least emotionally.

So we try to maximize the advantages of the sea view, with only glass on the facade facing the sea, removing all possible decorative factors that may interfere. At the same time, the layout of indoor seats is parallel to the sea, allowing guests present to enjoy the sea view as much as possible; The ceiling system emphasizes the vertical lines of the sea, which facilitates the sorting of ceiling pipelines and enhances the directionality of space towards the sea surface.

Not only that, in order to further strengthen the relationship with the sea, the lines of the indoor ceiling continue to extend outward, becoming a jadeite green grille material before intersecting with the exterior curtain wall and continuing to extend until it becomes part of the exterior sunshade eaves. This processing technique blurs the perceptual boundaries between indoors and outdoors, while also allowing the structure of the eaves to penetrate deep into the interior, reducing the diagonal components of the facade and making the eaves purer and lighter.

Deep eaved Tianzi grid
At the beginning of the project, a type of Tianzi grid made of jadeite green fiberglass happened to appear in our material library.. At the beginning, I didn't know what to do with it, only that this material had an inexplicable fit with the venue. In retrospect, it should have been too compatible with the unique environment of Sanya. The green coconut trees, the azure sky, and the transparent sea are all very similar to the grid structure we have chosen. Combined with the rough processing texture and strong weather resistance of this material itself, it can blend seamlessly into the mottled natural living conditions of island fishing villages without any enclosure.

Due to the climate in Sanya, it is necessary to have as many shading areas as possible in any direction. At the same time, large areas of glass can cause a decrease in thermal performance, so we have set up ultra deep eaves structures in areas with large areas of glass, that is, in the direction facing the sea. The overhanging eaves extend from indoors through the glass exterior wall and reach out to the sea. On the one hand, the shading system optimizes the thermal performance to a certain extent, and on the other hand, the overhanging eaves extending towards the sea also enhance the directionality towards the sea. Here we apply the jadeite green field grid to the eaves. This reinforced glass fiber composite material can withstand the erosion of sea winds and refract its brilliance under the brilliant sunshine of Sanya. With the change of weather, it presents different air qualities of warm and humid cloudy days and gorgeous sunny days. Regardless of the weather conditions, the emerald green eaves and the emerald green sea of Sanya blend together to some extent in front of the window, as if one can enter the sea at any time.

The project is a reconstruction of a three storey building, which can accommodate two stores: the first and second floors are Seafood hot-pot stores, and the third floor and roof terrace are used as dining bar space. The two stores operate independently and cannot have any influence on each other. So the first step in the renovation is to consider how to plan the two flow lines so that they are independent and not conflicting with each other. It is necessary to consider adding an additional vertical traffic to bypass the first and second floors and directly lead to the third floor.
We have always believed that for the restaurants and bars in this house, the business area needs to be comfortable and calm, so that people can enjoy the sea and relax. And how to enter the traffic space requires attention, so we abandoned the original indoor staircase that runs up and down, and added an external staircase on the other side of the building, connecting the second floor terrace and the third floor bar. At the second floor terrace, we also added a straight staircase that runs towards the sea and connects to the road. In this way, we have two different vertical traffic spaces: one is perpendicular to the sea, not only serving as a traffic artery in front of the bar, but also providing a public three-dimensional check-in area for pedestrians with a clear width of 2 meters and graffiti on the walls; Another external steel frame staircase, wrapped in semi transparent frosted U-shaped glass, creates a blurred separation effect from the environment and provides a psychological preparation process for guests entering the bar.

In addition, the roof of the bar is also the area where we have made the most changes. Due to the low net height of the original three story space, we removed the original roof and raised it up by one meter. At the same time, we realized that if the large business area of the rooftop terrace was only one height, it would be a bit wasteful for sea view applications. Therefore, we set three heights on the roof to provide unobstructed sea view resources in the rear space. The steel frame staircase wrapped in U-glass leads directly to the roof and forms an organic whole with the rooftop bar counter. In the evening, this semi transparent glass organism receives the sunset halo behind it, adding a romantic atmosphere to the entire venue and creating a light and shadow effect for the bar space that is about to open in the evening.

Two attributes of the project and the final temperament presented
Xidao Island in Sanya is the largest indigenous tourist island in Hainan. Compared with other places, it is not only a tourist island with high-quality sea view resources, but also a complete island that preserves the living conditions of local fishermen.. This spontaneous blend of refined tourism needs and lazy fisherman lifestyle is precisely the unique temperament we hope to capture and present in this project. So we don't pursue pure cleanliness in design, but allow the sea breeze to leave traces of washing, and also allow fishing village traces such as boat boards, graffiti, and lighthouses to appear on building facades.

In the early stages of construction, as designers, we naturally hoped that the project could be presented in an exquisite manner, as its audience was tourists from big cities. However, during the construction process, we found that precise control of the project is basically impossible, even with the full cycle follow-up of resident designers. Because this project is also a rural self built house renovation, the workers are all local masters. Like other construction projects in other places, requiring masters to lay out lines, make samples, and plan production, which are easy to achieve in the city, encountered great resistance here. In addition, due to the unstable climate along the coast and issues with island transportation, we had to follow up on the construction process and adjust the design accordingly.

We, who were once on the verge of collapse, suddenly realized one day that the final state of the project, the mottled and uneven alignment after being washed away by the sea, wind, rain, and water, was actually very harmonious with the surrounding environment of the site. And this coincides with our initial pursuit of embodying the lazy lifestyle of the island. I now feel that overly delicate projects may seem a bit abrupt in this place. Perhaps this state of both detachment and acceptance by the environment has created the unique temperament of the current project.
