Renovation of Oimachi Office: Reshaping a 73 year old wooden house for a new type of work and life - This 73 year old wooden house is only five minutes away from Oimachi Station. Through a renovation that balances clarity, protection, and adaptability, it has been transformed into a modern workspace. The building is located in an area densely populated with post-war wooden structures, which are situated behind the more prominent commercial buildings and mid to high rise office buildings in the area. This wooden house used to be a typical residence in a relatively quiet area of the city, but now it has transformed into a fully functional and distinctive office.
大井町办公室改造：为新型工作生活重塑一座 73 年历史的木屋——这座拥有 73 年历史的木屋距离大井町站仅五分钟路程，通过一次兼顾清晰性、保护性与适应性的改造，它已转变为一个现代化的工作空间。该建筑位于战后木结构建筑密集的区域，这些建筑坐落于该地区更为显眼的商业建筑和中高层办公楼后方。这座木屋曾是城市中较为静谧区域里的一座典型住宅，如今却摇身一变，成为了一座功能完备且富有特色的办公室。

The entrance has been redesigned, new doors have been installed, and the exterior wall finish has been updated to create a clean and tidy surface for easy installation of signage - so that its commercial use can be immediately identified from the outside. Just behind the door, a partition wall has been added to provide visual and spatial separation between the entrance and the main work area, creating a private space suitable for customer visits or meetings. There is also a wall mounted coat rack and storage unit installed here, with a soft and informal design that contrasts sharply with typical office storage facilities.
入口经过重新设计，安装了新门并对外墙饰面进行了更新，打造出一个干净整洁的表面，便于安装标识牌 —— 这样一来，从外部即可立即辨识出其商业用途。就在门后，新增了一面隔断墙，用于在入口与主要工作区域之间提供视觉和空间上的分隔，营造出一层适合客户来访或会议的私密空间。此处还设置了一个壁挂式衣帽架和置物架单元，其设计柔和且非正式，与典型的办公室储物设施形成鲜明对比。

On the first floor, all existing flooring - previously made of wood grain like polyvinyl chloride (PVC) material - has been replaced with a uniform gray durable finish. Now, a row of orange tiles extends from the entrance all the way to the back of the space, passing through the bathroom and leading to the overall bathroom. Above the head, the corresponding ceiling panel strip has built-in downlight, which extends along the same line ingeniously, providing a sense of direction and rhythm for the original open space.

A compact stainless steel kitchen has been installed in the area that used to have tatami rooms. The kitchen was designed with flexibility in mind, equipped with a movable central island and an embedded induction cooker, making it easy to adjust the layout according to team lunch, seminars, or more casual usage scenarios. The power sockets in the entire space have been carefully arranged, and their positions are determined based on the expected placement of desks and equipment. In addition, the curtain guide rail is cleverly integrated into the wall, which can achieve flexible visual control and hide the original aluminum alloy window frame invisibly.
在曾经设有榻榻米房间的区域，现已安装了一个紧凑的不锈钢厨房。该厨房在设计时充分考虑了灵活性，配备了一个可移动的中岛台和嵌入式电磁炉，便于根据团队午餐、研讨会或更休闲的使用场景轻松调整布局。整个空间内的电源插座都经过精心布置，根据预计的办公桌和设备摆放位置来确定其位置。此外，窗帘导轨被巧妙地融入墙体之中，这样既能实现视觉上的灵活控制，又能将原有的铝合金窗框隐匿于无形。

The second floor was completely connected by removing the ceiling and non load bearing partition walls. The exposed roof structure displays the original wooden frame, while a new insulation layer and roof have been added above to ensure the comfort and energy performance of the space, without sacrificing the openness of the vertical space. A symbolic decoration from the j ō t ō shiki ceremony has been preserved - a subtle detail that carries profound historical significance. The design avoids unnecessary visual interference and instead quietly creates an atmosphere with repurposed doors, soft wall colors, and an orange chandelier.
二楼通过拆除天花板和非承重隔墙被完全打通。暴露的屋顶结构展现出原有的木构框架，同时上方新增了隔热层和新屋顶，以确保空间的舒适度和能源性能，且不牺牲垂直空间的开阔感。原屋上梁仪式（jōtōshiki）中的一个象征性装饰被保留了下来 —— 这一细节虽不起眼，却蕴含着深刻的历史意义。设计上避免了不必要的视觉干扰，转而让重新利用的门、柔和的墙面色彩以及一盏橙色的吊灯来悄然营造氛围。

The comparison between the renovated statue and the old one. The floors and roofs of the two-story building have been rebuilt, but traces of the original ceiling and wall finishes can still be seen beneath or beside these new surfaces. This duality has become a design principle: the visible "bottom" structure in the new building quietly tells the story of the past. The spatial characteristics of the project are shaped by the hierarchical relationship between the past and present.
此次改造尊重新与旧之间的对比。两层楼的地面和屋顶均已重建，但在这些新表面之下或旁边，仍可见原有天花板和墙面饰面的痕迹。这种双重性成为了一项设计原则：新建筑中可见的“底部”结构，静静诉说着过往的模样。项目的空间特色正是由这种过去与现在之间的分层关系所塑造的。

The Oimachi office, while clearly defining its new functions, does not conceal the characteristics inherited by the building itself. It showcases how Tokyo's old wooden houses continue to play an important role in the urban landscape, especially in areas where high-rise buildings and humanized scale buildings coexist.
