The Newburgh Tower of Light is located in Auburn Village, Melbourne, Australia, with a prime location that offers a highly sustainable housing solution. It can accommodate 21 people on a nearly impossible 150 square meter site and on a historic train station, with a total of 10 floors. Due to the lack of a street entrance, the north facade is directly adjacent to the Victorian Transport Authority, and complex fire safety, building methods, acoustics, uniform lighting, and stability requirements dominate most of the design process. The response is a mini tower type, where each residence has a complete floor and uses glass bricks as a key material to meet fire and lighting requirements. Conceptually, the semi transparent exterior wall combined with the entire reflective finish forms a lantern in the public domain, while creating a brief effect within the residence.

In order to address building limitations, the design adopts modularity and clean and concise expressions commonly found in dense urban environments. The north and south facades use prefabricated components, glass brick panels, and operable embedded glass to maximize connectivity with light and landscape. The north and south facades need to be completely semi transparent and complemented by a minimal core to achieve future facing lighting. The complex metal details on the prefabricated panels can be seen from the interior and adjacent train stations.

Cast in place concrete was selected for its ability to withstand train derailment, forming the ground level and equipped with integrated seats to activate the small coffee shop in front of the entrance and pedestrian railway connection line. The cobblestone road paved with bluestone extends from the alley on one side to the sidewalk on the other, forming a complementary pixelated pattern that emphasizes maximum bottom layer permeability despite the small size of the plot.

In order to expand the appeal, especially considering the proximity to the train, we separated the bedroom and bathroom, increasing the possibility of a third separable room and adding a certain degree of storage/bike space, which also attracted students or individuals to share. Although fully functional, this layout is also crucial for achieving the required level of lighting in future situations, as the private land to the north should be expanded and produce excellent cross ventilation.

The language of architectural grid is applied to the interior material palette through wooden paneling, natural stone, and ceramic tiles. Glass bricks present a unique interior decoration, creating brilliant and varied lighting effects throughout the day. Realize light penetration through the floor through textured glass doors and interior walls. The upper level is a customized top-level apartment, with a residential building consisting of two floors. Despite the high modular efficiency of the building, it still maintains its uniqueness.
