The project is located in a small village in Pudong, Shanghai. Not far from the southwest, you can see the rail transit running on the elevated road. The east side is adjacent to the neighbors, the west side faces the river, and across the river is dense forest. The peninsula base is its characteristic. The first time I visited the base, I was not shocked by the beautiful countryside scenery, but by how the rail transit switched the city and countryside so dreamily, like time traveling. The original building was an old house built in the 1980s and was in a dangerous stage. The owner applied for a reconstruction, hoping that their parents could live in a more comfortable and comfortable environment.

Space division

The main building, auxiliary rooms, and main entrance hall divide the narrow north-south base into six virtual and real spaces.. The main building and the auxiliary room enclose an inward courtyard, and a twin boxwood tree is planted in the inner courtyard, which naturally echoes the trees on the other side of the river. The entrance hall and auxiliary rooms enclose a sunken courtyard and temporary parking space at the same height as the road. The entrance hall and the main building of the auxiliary room gradually increase in height, welcoming the guests with a humble attitude. The preserved persimmon tree presides over the courtyard facing south, and the open space has a new order. The central axis of the main building defines the public and private areas, with relatively quiet private areas such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and study rooms on the east side. The dining room, stairs, and second floor living room on the west side facing the river are public areas open to the river. The spatial pattern of one courtyard and one alley has the depth of the city.

Folded floor slabs

The auxiliary and main buildings enclose the inner courtyard, and the sunken courtyard planted with trees is conducive to water collection and drainage in Shanghai during the rainy season.. The roof of the second floor of the main building slopes towards the inner courtyard at a light angle, and the end floor slab reverses and rises again to the east, creating a harmonious dialogue with the neighboring eaves. The auxiliary rooms also curve towards the inner courtyard and return to the hall with four waters. The auxiliary room roof is cantilevered in an east-west direction, extending southward to construct a two-story floor slab, and continuing southward to extend a balcony and then turning back towards the roof, connecting with the roof as a whole. The auxiliary roof, which curves upwards towards the north, folds down and continues to construct the first floor slab of the inner courtyard and main building towards the south. The ambiguous relationship between the folds of the roof, floor slabs, and walls creates tension between the main and auxiliary, up and down, and inside and outside spaces, giving the space multiple narrative possibilities.

Spatial Narrative

The narrow and long window opening above the north side of the entrance hall guides the direction of the wind.. The low stool hanging from the wall below can be used for a brief sitting. The gradually increasing steps and outdoor platform by the river lead our gaze forward, and through the entrance hall, we unexpectedly meet the passing rail transit. The five doors open to the river seem to welcome the host back home, with twin boxwood trees in the inner courtyard serving as green guides. The left branch points to the studio and study in the auxiliary room, while the right branch points to the living room and dining room in the main building. Looking out of the living room, boxwood blends with sunlight in a different posture, leaving mottled tree shadows on the east wall. The curved roof of the auxiliary room slowly directs the gaze towards the northern sky.

Light pours into the living room through the wall and follows the direction of the light up the stairs. Looking back at the forest, countryside, and distant light rail station in the direction of the entrance through the corner landscape window, it brings us closer to the city. The french window in the living room on the second floor can take a panoramic view of the river and the natural scenery on the other side. The balcony of the connected south bedroom not only provides shade, but the enlarged balcony frame hole constantly captures images of the countryside and rail transit movement. The restaurant opens up to the river landscape and extends towards the fields, making it more wild and natural.

Schema

Cities have too many residential and living patterns, while rural areas are singular.. The rural schema always conforms and assimilates within its inherent schema. The light rail that rumbles past seems to be passing through layers of patterns, and this wrinkled box is constructing a different residential pattern from rural and urban areas.
